Sign Petition to Stand Up for Kids in Kansas!

Austerity cuts are happening all over the developed world and popular movements in the US have been responding over the past year with strong political action. In Kansas, state funding to education has been on the chopping block for many years. I grew up in a rural town and our community high school is fundamental to every citizen's livelihood, which is true for many communities. It is important to join the collective efforts to send a message to policy and law makers like Kansas Senator Brownback that investing in Kansas schools and maintaining a well-run educational system for our state should be a top priority for the state's budget.

From the petition site, "By cutting public school funding in 2011 and proposing an inadequate new school funding formula in 2012, Governor Brownback has sent a clear message that he does not value a high quality public education for all Kansas children."

AFT-Kansas, Kansas Families for Education, and Kansas United in Voice & Spirit released a press release to launch a petition campaign called "Kansas Madness" this week. The petition targets the governor’s proposal before the Kansas legislature that gives local districts more control over local fundraising but simultaneously adds more cuts to the system overall. Groups say the proposal "... is inadequate and threatens the state’s long tradition of giving every child a high quality public education."

Citizens can sign the petition at www.ksmadness.com.
