Celebrating Baby with a Baby Movie Marathon

It's pretty surprising how many awesome movies are all about pregnancy and parenting. To celebrate our baby girl, due in August, Amit and I put together a unique list of the best baby movies:

  • Baby Mama (2008)
  • The hilarious Tina Fey and Amy Poehler star in a film about a working woman trying to have a baby with a surrogate mother. It's sick how we're both in so love with Liz Lemon from 30 Rock.

  • Babies (2010)

Sign Petition to Stand Up for Kids in Kansas!

Austerity cuts are happening all over the developed world and popular movements in the US have been responding over the past year with strong political action. In Kansas, state funding to education has been on the chopping block for many years. I grew up in a rural town and our community high school is fundamental to every citizen's livelihood, which is true for many communities.

Oatmeal-Chocolate Harmony Cookies

Growing up with my father prepared me for being asked today to keep the chips out of half of my batch of oatmeal chocolate chip cookies! Apparently there are some people who willingly deny themselves chocolate. The following is adapted from Sara Musil Townsend's "Best Chocolate Chip Cookies" recipe from the Lippert Family Cookbook:

Crazy In Love with Art Blogs

Maybe it's just because they're my friends that I'm convinced of their objective geniuses. Now I'll have to post about my terrific musician friends, too. But first, I offer you two of my favorites, M. Cody White and A. Petersen:

Art of the 99%

Favianna Rodriguez writes at the Just Seeds blog, “The fact that its even acceptable for us to critique capitalism in mainstream conversations and in mainstream media, opens many doors for activists, artists, and for the entire social justice sector overall. I find it inspiring that this movement has at its core, a thriving arts and culture component.”

New, F*ing-awesome Campaign from Reporters Without Borders is Directed at Tourists

See more: http://www.censorship-paradise.com/en/

Reporters Without Borders has begun a strong and creative campaign aimed at tourists to Mexico, Thailand, and Vietnam, three countries with severe human rights violations. The campaign urges consumers of vacation packages that drive these countries' tourism industries to "get the real low-down on your holiday destination."

Online Petitions at whitehouse.gov: Representation in a Connected World

You can now petition the White House directly:

Any petition successful enough to gather 25,000 signatures merely receives a response from Obama's administration and a promise to hand over the petition to the right folks in either Congress or the Senate.

The idea is cool. And some of the petitions are pretty great, like the most popular with 70,000 signatures to legalize pot. However,

Are you a WordPress.com user?

Federated Media has just announced a partnership with WordPress.com. "The deal will include all of the blogs that are hosted under the company which comes to around 25 million." WordPress.com users will now be subjected to a big re-vamp of corporate-sponsored advertizing.

Perhaps it's time you considered taking more control over your blog?

It's very easy, and not expensive, to leave Wordpress.com's (Federated Media's) generally irresponsible Software as a Service practices to instead host your own website. After all, Wordpress is Free Software (unlike Blogger), so you're nearly there already! You just need to follow these steps*:

Rural Palestinian Farmers Resist Occupation

The Palestinian struggle for liberation is not only ideological and moral. Israel's occupation of Palestine violates numerous human rights, including food sovereignty.

"To exist is to resist," says one famous graffiti message written on the apartheid wall. For farmers, to farm is to resist. And for Palestinians who have joined in non-violent resistance such as the boycott against Israeli products, to buy local produce is to resist. Food sovereignty of the Palestinian people is one fundamental issue that is complicated, intentionally, by Israeli policy. On the other hand, food sovereignty is a pivotal point for a Free Palestine.

Mesopotamia Social Forum: Amed, Kurdistan

The Mesopotamia Social Forum in Kurdistan: A Report and Photo Gallery

The forum's message was “Freedom Will Prevail” and its program contained around 80 activities that gathered 2,000 participants from 170 organizations. (According to the local organizing committee). The opening march was met with strong state police presence, although the local governments were supportive of the forum. Also, a march against violence on women, highlighting that Kurdistan is a place where honor crimes are a reality, was also faced with control and confrontations by riot police. Both confrontations with the Turkish state enforcements were without incident. And these confrontations highlight the tension between the local Kurdish government, who were supportive of the forum events, and the Turkish state government, which regarded the forum with suspicion.

Making Political Technology Choices Defends Human Rights

Many of the most significant threats to human rights today are due to the globalization of capital. Indirect, world-wide effects include lower wages and poverty, climate change, and forced migration, among others. Interventions by some corporations have directly caused the censorship and repression of popular movements that attempt to address the detrimental effects of globalization. Additionally, other corporations are complicit in military development, surveillance, destruction of land, and theft or control of popular knowledge.

Queers: Coming to a Rural Town Near You

There's a lot of myths about gay folks, many of these myths tell us more about straight culture than they do gay culture, however. This recent post from the Daily Yonder tries to explain the phenomenon of the gayest rural town in Minnesota, Pine City. In short, the re-ruralization of queer culture has a lot to do with acceptance:

Large-scale, Ongoing Mobilization Against the Tar Sands Oil Pipeline

Hundreds of people in Washington to protect communities and water have been arrested for civil disobedience aimed at highlighting the detrimental impacts of the Keystone XL Tar Sands Oil Pipeline. The demonstration won't end for another week and neither will the repression. This mass-mobilization against the Tar Sands Oil projects comes from intense, international organizing work led by Indigenous groups in North America and supported by the larger environmental movement in the western hemisphere.

Backyards of Cultural Solidarity

Industrial Revolutions

Make some coffee and watch this with your kids this morning. Hopefully they will get to see beauty like this in an increasingly post-industrial world, which is the backdrop for this film featuring Danny Macaskill and directed by Stu Thomson. Music by Ben Howard.

Richard M. Stallman Lectures on Free Software in the West Bank

Richard M. Stallman recently visited the Occupied Palestinian Territories for a series of talks on Free Software and related issues. After a false start when Stallman scheduled talks at Israeli universities, he acquiesced to the condition that on his Palestine-sponsored tour he would respect the boycott on Israel[0]. Ultimately, his trip was sponsored by ISOC[1], an organization committed to bringing free internet to Ramallah, along with a community fundraiser free from any corporate sponsorship.

"Fracking" is a Practice as Violent as It Sounds

The United State Energy Department endorses fracking because it can retrieve natural gas that's hard to get to. The report is "cautious" about the method because it fires water, sand, and chemicals deep into the Earth, fracturing shale rock.

Fracking has already been outlawed in New Jersey due to the vigilant work of environmental activists in the Northeast. Companies have begun this practice where I live in Northwest Kansas and from a friend's farm, the blasts can be heard even at night. My pal, Ryan Murray, said in a FB post: "The 'frack'n' ?? They do to these gas wells is loud. Sounds like a rocket taken off! Kind of cool tho."

A New Tale to Turn the Migration Tide

Published at the Daily Yonder

Recently, I had the opportunity to travel abroad to support a grassroots organization that is struggling to preserve local heritage and way of life. As I boarded the plane that would be taking me thousands of miles from my rural Kansas home to another isolated community in the West Bank of Palestine, I spied an HSBC bank advertisement on the jetway. Beside a picture of an old VW Beetle piled with a family's possessions and traversing gorgeous mountain terrain, a message says, "Every day 200,000 people leave the countryside for the city."

Demanding (or Politely Asking for) Access to User Data

India wants special monitoring access for Twitter, Facebook

We know from news around the recent Flytilla that Israel gained some level of access to Facebook. The US Department of Defense and law enforcement use Facebook and Twitter routinely. Now, India is also demanding special access from Facebook, Twitter, and other online services.

Digital Nomadism

A post about the fantasy of working abroad by Paul Karl Lukacs is titled Five Hard Truths About Being A Digital Nomad.

Basically:

1. It’s lonely.
2. After a while, travel becomes a repetitive hassle.
3. Your friends and family don’t care about your adventures.
4. It will have a negative effect on your employability.
5. It’s more expensive than people say.
